May the loss & Gain Begin: My tale

Yes dear friends I play with words.  I cannot help it, my beautiful bride does love wordplay and, in spite of another, my brilliant & handsome son and intelligently beautiful daughter (our Kids) enjoy the same.  So revel if you will revile if you must but that is the order of my days…….

Preface:

An unfortunate happenstance of the modern day is that you have to actually inform people that you are not a medical expert and are not giving out medical advice even if you want to share with others. In this litigious country we have grown into, a person sharing his victory over diabetes was sued by the state for practicing medicine without a license (one of the Carolinas or Virginia I believe).  So I will now go on record for the vampires of humanity out there (I mean legal counsel, lawyers) and other ambulance chasers:

I am NOT a doctor and am not giving medical or dietary advice or medical counsel to any human being, dead or alive.  This is my expression of free speech and expression.  Do anything I do at YOUR OWN RISK PERIOD.  To the bevy of advertisers out there NO I am NOT copying your System.  I have researched this since age 11 which makes the longevity of said research longer than your pimply-faced over-steroidal ego has existed.

Also if you are offended… Simply go away……..

That complete, mon ami, let me say that when I DO mention someone or a system it is because I have researched it and have tried it out on myself and been impressed (or sometimes not) I will only have ads from system I wish to support (note the dirth of ads currently.

So let us breathe and start this epic tale of accomplishment and certified cure for insomnia…..

 Round 2 -The beginning:

I will divide this discussion into 2 parts:

  • Physical Trials and tribulations
  • Occasionally connected research on the same

The former I will attempt to keep up, even if abbreviated, on a daily basis.  Forgive however the sometimes frequent lapse into a coma that nighttime exercise can bring.  The latter will be almost constant and occasionally obsessive, particularly if I have a bug up my posterior about something.  You are now forewarned and ready to become part of the mind-meld….

Numbers, numbers, it’s all in the numbers….

Any good dietary tale begins with the numbers.  You have seen the true numbers for Glucose, AiC and BP & P online, but here you will see the uglier numeric truth.

I have come from a 50-inch waist, 287 lb. round person (round IS a shape) down to a 202 Lb., 38-inch waisted chubster at present.  In the past 4 months of preparation for this round I have gone from 210 to 202 with a fat-mass loss of >9%  (31% down to 22.4% (go here for the numbers: http://www.skinbodyfitness.com/bmr_bmi_bfp.htm).  Yes I have gained muscle mass, beaten pre-diabetes and osteoporosis. (Yes osteoporosis, more another day)  So I still have a long way to go.  Even at my Best shape (160Lb. 30-inch waist) I was still considered overwight and my BMI too much.  Even though my measured body fat (Caliper method) was a whopping 10.2%.  Yeah dear friends, I am not a fan of BMI… I believe the year was 1996 when the CDC and/or AMA changed the rules for what was fat and obese, and suddenly 50 million American went to bed Fit and woke up Fat the next morning….  But that is another soap box.

Places to follow me:

Mostly you should follow me here, on this gentle blog.  You can also find out exactly what I’ve eaten, when, and how I have exercised at http://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/diary/paulnc2008;  If you join you can simply ping me and I will add you to the list of voyeurs (oops did I way that) who are currently following me.

On With the show!

The second round and the first I blog: My “Metabolic Surge”

A review of the program I am following can be found here: http://blogcritics.org/books/article/book-review-metabolic-surge-how-to/.  It is the one I am currently following, I recommend it only for those who have built up or down (weight-wise) to it.  His science is relatively sound and the videos he presents are home-made and believeable.  He follows his own program as well.  His book is entitled: “Metabolic Surge: How To Build Muscle and Lose Fat Fast” by Nick Nilsson.  I am not sure of the fast part, but it is working for me.  One caution, especially if you are male, he emphasizes safty, which means DO NOT SHOW OFF IN THE GYM!  You will hurt yourself.  Basicaly, don’t be stupid and yes dear lady friends, his wife/GF/Significant other/ whatever the hell is acceptable currently; has helped him with his book.  I bought his book/plan (@$27) and am glad I did.  I got confirmation on the research I had been doing and also am not in debt up to my eyeballs with some $300/Month diet-food plan….

I also recommend the Brink Zone (William Brink): http://www.brinkzone.com/.  The science is solid and well documented no need to buy anything, simply join the newsletter and read…..

On to the program…..

My Daily exercise routine:  April 9, 2013.  Day 1:

I weighed in and started the first part called fat-loss Circuit training.  It is a mix of weight sets (he instructs you gently on how to decide how much weight) and an immediate 40-second cardio burst after each set.  It sounds odd but the High Intensity Interval Resistance Training (HIIRT) is a scientific way to keep the metabolism up.  I am exhausted at this writing but my body (I keep telling myself) will thank me for it J

Basically the weight/resistance part is several reps (low-reps) of quick-burst exercises (e.g.dumbbell snatch), then chest exercises, Quads, Hamstrings and Core exercises (abs, back, rotators) with a 40 second maximal effort at the cardio without a stop in between each set.

Simple? Nay Yay dear doubter! What appeared light when you began makes the rock of gibralter seem a pebble by comparison when you’re done.  Maximum calories and only @ 40 minutes exercising total.  Tonight very well I will sleep.

The Diet: I’ve posted it on MyFitnesspal.com for you to see.  Basically, low carb in this cycle instance (not hard to achieve) and the calorie requirements are hard to achieve they seem so high.  Plenty of fluids are needed. I drink @ 14 glasses of liquids daily (my bladder is VERY fit).

That is it for today except for one number I will share:  Blood Glucose – 81  ot bad for a pre-diabetic.

Tomorrow is the same routine for exercise.  Enjoy the vagaries of my diet…

Good night dear friends.
